Farewell River Spinners

The River Spinners had a good run. Approximately twenty years. 

So much knowledge shared, friendships made, yarn spun, and fabric created.

If you are reading this you are probably wondering were to turn now to further your skills, inspiration, and/or find good company of those that also love the fiber arts. Lucky for you we care to share alternative sources of fiber arts knowledge in the area.

The Putney School Summer Programs Adult Week

What happened to the guild's equipment? A couple of pieces of equipment were sold and the remaining equipment was donated to the fiber arts program at The Putney School in the memory of our late member Victoria Huff.

What happened to the guild's finances? We are renewing the subscription to Spin-Off magazine at Brooks Memorial Library and after that all remaining funds will be donated to The Putney School's Rwanda Fund in memory of late member Victoria Huff as soon as the accounts are settled and then the checking account will be closed. I will try to post more info about the Rwanda Putney connection over the next few weeks as it is a worth while cause and you may be inclined to support it as well.

Who was Victoria Huff? Victoria Huff was a lovely and brilliant soul that cared about giving back to The Putney School because they had been so generous to the guild over the years with time, expertise, and workshop space. She was spinning yarn around the time of her passing in the hopes of it being sold to help raise funds for the Rwanda Project (See below for more info on Rwanda Project). We honor her activism, spirit, and life. She died unexpectedly on June 14, 2017.

What will happen to guild's lovely logo of a sheep spinning a river of fiber? It has been given back the original artist to use as she sees fit.

We have been working to close out all emails, social sites, other sites that reference the guild.

Silk Workshop with Robin Russo in September

Update - I just got off the phone with Robin. She is bringing mating moths with her! They have just completed their 17 day metamorphosis.  - Elizabeth - 9/13/16

Understanding silk from the egg to the final product. We will cover everything about silk from raising silkworms to spinning every form of silk available to the hand-spinner. This class involves a little science, geography, history, and lots of spinning. We examine silk fabrics, threads and fibers with magnification devices; reel cocoons; stretch cocoons over frames (hankies); and blend silk with other fibers to create luxurious yarns. This is a very popular class. I have been teaching this subject since 1989 when I first began raising silkworms. If this class is greater than 1 day it can include making silk paper or incorporating silk into your felting projects. --Robin's brief description of class

Melissa Johnson

Melissa moved to southern Vermont from Istanbul in 1973 and graduated from The Putney School in 1977. She learned to weave at the Putney School from Libby Mills, one of the Green Mountain Spinney founders, and now teaches Textile and Fiber Arts as a member of the Putney School faculty. She attended the University of Vermont, Goddard College and apprenticed to Trudy Walker, a production weaver, before beginning her career as a weaver and knitwear designer. Melissa has been working with the Green Mountain Spinnery since the beginning in 1981.

She teaches workshops on weaving, knitting, and natural and synthetic dyeing to all skill levels and multiple topics simultaneously all the while being supportive, helpful, gracious, and as lovely as possible. Melissa is a designer, dyer, and color consultant, and creates custom textiles on commission. During the summer of 2013, she and a group from Putney School brought looms and yarn to Kigali, Rwanda. They set up a weaving studio and taught 12 disadvantaged Rwandans to weave. The Rwandan weavers have now formed a co-operative and are producing scarves for sale to support themselves and their families. Melissa continues to visit the Rwandan weavers and is surely saving up yarns and planning her next visit.

Melissa is a lifelong member of the River Spinners.

Desire to weave.

What to bring:
Your own handspun yarns are not a requirement but suggested due to the topic.
Rigid heddles are fine, but we encourage the use of floor looms at The Putney School.
Lunch and snacks.

Pricing:
$60 (members only event due to the 10 participant limit)
Cost to become a member $20 (just $10 youth through 21) New members will only have option of taking class if there are any openings.
Nominal material fee should you desire to use yarn from the weaving studio. Paid by weight at the event. Very affordable.
The studio is open from start of class to end of last day – we will need to be off looms by the last day.

Business meeting will be held during one of the days - date will be determined after we have a better idea of what day will have the most attendance. All are welcome join business meeting voting is a member privilege.

Scholarships:
A limited number of partial scholarships are available. Please only request if the cost is preventative for you to attend. Scholarship recipients will have all but $5 of class fee waived.

Registration:
Registration in advance is required as space is limited to 10 people. If you are planning to attend please register by March 1, so that we can have a better idea what day do hold the business meeting and if any outside advertising will be required in the end. Green Mt. weavers and Spinners 3rd annual spin in

Spin in will be held Saturday, February 20, from 9:30 - 3:00. It will be at the Parish Hall, All Saints Church, Summer Street (next to the Post Office), North Adams.

Please join in for a day of spinning, learning, sharing, camaraderie, relaxing, knitting, or just socializing.

Spinners, weavers, knitters, crocheters, shepherds, and everyone welcome.

No schedule, so come for the day, an hour, or whatever fits your schedule.

If you have a special skill you would like to share, there will be an opportunity to do that, as well.

Fiber related Swap table..only one rule..if no one else wants that ugly yarn you brought it goes back home with you.

Plenty of parking, kitchen facilities, chairs, it will be bright and warm, coffee and tea provided. Munchies welcomed.

Fall 2015 Workshops!

Recap: Guild members had a lovely time at the June meeting at the Brattleboro Food Coop and a blending day in July.

August 29: Members only dye day in Newfane from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m being lead by Sumac. We are close enough to the new year that if you were not already a member and joined now we would honor that as your 2015-16 dues. See information below the signature on what it means to join. If you plan to attend please be in contact so I can share the details, such as brown bag lunches, directions, what to bring (fiber, yarn, heat sources).

September 13: I have some exciting news. We are bringing Richard Muto and David Lima back again this September. They have agreed to teach the two different topics (The Perfect Rolag and the English Long Draw and Lace-Weight Spinning to Cobweb-Weight Spinning) we were interested in on 9/13. We will have one before lunch (our annual start of year business meeting) and then the second topic after lunch. The Putney School graciously is allowing us to use one of their spaces for the class. Same parking lot but a different location than the Robin Russo workshop. Directions will be sent to those that registered for the class.

The pricing is equally exciting and very affordable. The details are in the registration and sign up. Registration opened to members last week and we are already 1/3 of the way full for the morning class. If you are interested please act fast as I will be sending out press releases shortly and sharing the link on social media.

Golding Prototype Loom for sale $500 and purchaser must plan to use it and love it and will have to pick it up in Bondville.

The loom is the Standard 36" 4 Harness jack loom. It was unfinished and wiped down with some beeswax/orange oil but it has not had polyurethane applied. It needs a 36" reed. When I got it years ago I emailed Tom and he said the Harrisville Design 36" reeds fit perfectly but the Schacht reeds are too long, and that it was perfectly okay to leave the wood unfinished, but if anyone wanted to finish it he recommended a wipe on polyurethane in two coats. It has never been used and is in need of a loving weaver!

You may want to consider formally joining the River Spinners if you have not already done so, and there are many advantages if you do so. Fiscal Year runs September 1, through August 31. Dues for River Spinners is $20 a year. Youth dues rate is $10 (high school - 21 years old) a year. Guild Member's Weaving Work on Display this Weekend!

The Hill Institute in Florence Ma is holding it's annual exhibition this weekend. Kim Cannon's master weaver work will be on display. She would love to see you there.

Hill Institute is holding its annual exhibition on Friday, May 15, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.and Saturday, May 16, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public free of charge. Students' projects will be on display throughout the school: paintings (all mediums), quilts, sewing, home decorative sewing, knitting, crocheting, hooked and braided rugs, weaving, baskets, woodworking, skin-on-frame boats, jewelry making, and youth crafts. Also on display will be projects made by the kindergarten class.

Everyone is invited, and there will be free refreshments under the tent. Several of the instructors have donated items that they have made for a raffle. Raffle tickets can be purchased on both days of the exhibition, and the winners will be drawn at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Class objectives:

This spinning class will cover, yak, camel, qiviut, llama, alpaca, angora, and silk. We will discuss each animal's geography, history, and fiber properties. We will also spin from raw fiber, commercially prepared fiber, and our own fiber preparations. We will cover wheel adjustments, spinning techniques, and fiber preparation.

Instructor:

Robin Russo lives in Bradford, Vermont where she teaches spinning, felting, dyeing, and working with exotic fibers. She has been teaching since 1989 at gatherings of spinners, weavers, knitters, and historical societies. She had been a fiber enthusiast for more than forty years and takes every opportunity to explore its potential.

Minimum requirements:

Some spinning experience and comfort with own spinning equipment for basic yarn expected.

What to bring:

Spinning wheel, hand cards, combs, bagged lunch, a great attitude and willingness to try something new. (Guild has some extra combs)

Pricing:

Members $35 plus $18 materials fee. Send check for $53.

Non members $60 plus $18 materials fee. Send check for $78.

Cost to become a member $20 join and save!  Send check for $73 (adult) or

just $10 youth through 21.  Send check for $63 (youth) and gain all the member benefits.

Jenny Bakriges, founding guild member, has graciously offered to host socials at her home in Whitingham. We are thinking possibly doing this quarterly on Sunday's in between the quarterly meetings. I currently have the drum carder and the spinning wheel in my possession and am curious as to the location of the following items and to know what else we accumulated during my maternity leave.

I plan to suggest that we look over the equipment and determine what needs repair and cleaning during the meeting and vote on anything that needs to be done to get items in good working order and how to distribute them to River Spinner Members. Feel free to reply even if you don't have the items but you believe you know who had them last so I can follow up.

A Windham County Sampler of Weavers and Felters

UPCOMING EVENT: EVER POPULAR JAMAICA HISTORY DAY

This year’s celebration will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. to
3 p.m. and will feature a walking tour of the village and a special demonstration at
the Jamaica Historical Museum. Returning acclaimed fiber artists Richard Muto and
David Lima will demonstrate spinning and weaving techniques. Raffle tickets will
be sold and the lucky winner will receive a very special shawl – woven at this event.

Richard Muto is an award winning fiber artist who works as a spinner, weaver and
knitter creating one of a kind clothing and apparel. Richard studied theatre arts at
the University of Rhode Island and progressed to designing and knitting sweaters
before discovering the joy of spinning. He has won many awards in the field of
prepared fiber, judged at textile trials at sheep and wool festivals and continues
contributing as judge and member of several fiber and knitting guilds. He teaches
spinning and also finds the time to compose music for cabarets and music events – a
true renaissance man.

David Lima, an award winning spinner and weaver, has judged sheep and wool
festivals throughout the Northeast and is a member of the Rhode Island Spinners
Guild and founding member of the Maine Fiber Arts. His works have sold in shops
and galleries throughout New England. Jamaica is proud to host this talented pair
who will celebrate the renewed interest in this special craft.
Jamaica Village Walking Tour booklets with a map will be available and several
homes and establishments will be open to view.

Join us Saturday 9/6/14 for The Perfect Rolag/English Long Draw

Class Description: Learn to card the perfect rolag using hand cards.  Learn the twenty-four count of carding/ charging the cards, how to transfer the wool, and the trick of rolling under the hand card.  Perfect rolags, like wisps of smoke, perfect for the English Long Draw technique of spinning yarn.

Location: Brooks Memorial Library Meeting Room (back entrance on 2nd floor)

224 Main St, Brattleboro, VT 05301 - Library hours on Saturdays are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Registration deadline: 9/1/14 looking for a minimum of 10 participants, maximum of 40 participants - register early to help the planning.

How to register: Send an email with names and numbers in your party, indicate if you are a member or not, and if under 18 please indicate your age as well to riverspinners@gmail.com. Checks can be sent to PO Box 6043, Brattleboro, VT 05302 and should be made out to the River Spinners. Cash will be accepted at the door.

 

Cost: Free to members of the River Spinners, $30 for non members.

Minimum age: 12

What to bring: spinning experience, a spinning wheel with scotch tension, and hand cards (broken in if possible).

Prompt arrival at 10 required for a successful event.

June 21 Meeting Minutes

We had a very lovely meeting full of laughter and sharing by the 5 of us in attendance in the well lit meeting room. Please see last post for the full agenda.

We started off with show and tell where Betty, who drove up from Long Island that morning to be with us shared some exciting news. She was interviewed by Vogue Knitting with a story about her Moose Manor Hand Paints business and it will be appearing in the issue that is due to release on or before July 8.

Here is the cover so you know what to look for . . .

Sumac brought some gorgeous core spun yarns with cores ranging from bulky, to lace for inspiration and then gave us a hands on demonstration.  She even gave us a look at core less core spinning - who knew that even existed. It was very cool.  Thank you Sumac!!!!! What a great way to kick off our new quarterly meetings.

We voted on several things all unanimously at the meeting of all those in attendance.

1. There will be no official first Thursday night meetings from July - September
2. We set the dates for the next two quarterly meetings - same time (10:15-1:45) and place (Brooks Memorial Library meeting room) on September 6 and December 13. Please mark your calendars.
3. That we bring in an outside instructor (to be announced once they are secured to date and topic) from New England for the September meeting and that the guild pay for their services from the treasury.
4. That new officers are to be elected at the September meeting which will be the start of a new year for the River Spinners.

Additional items of discussion - although not voted on unanimous consent that this was how we wanted to proceed.

1. People should plan to bring dues for the September meeting we did not officially vote to reinstate as it makes more sense to do that at the start of the new business year
2. The December meeting we will have in place of the Yankee swap a destash round robin - no worries if you don't have a big enough stash to destash
3. The December meeting topic will be upcycling sweaters (Please step forward if you have expertise with this and can make the meeting) with focus manly on the following areas:
1. Salvaging for yarn
2. Making pillows from old sweaters
3. Making bags from old sweaters
4. We will plan for the March meeting to bring in another outside instructor
5. When we advertise the guild we are going to be less limiting as a spinning guild and let people know that other fiber arts and bead work is also welcome.

For core spinning, you'll need a yarn for the core.  It can be anything, as it will be covered.  I've used cotton or commercial yarn.  Here's a good use for your favorite ugly yarn/fiber. If you want your yarn to be on the more balanced side, add more twist to the yarn by spinning it onto a bobbin. Also will need a lazy kate and some fiber to cover the core with.  "Ordinary" fiber will work, or a more funky artsy blend. Time to play!
